Air filter cleaning on R1200GS?
Hamerknop somewhere mentioned that he would be taking the panels off the X-Challenge and clean the air filter, etc. So I was thinking - what about the air filter of a 1200GS? I regularly clean the air filter of the Yamaha (every 2nd / 3rd ride), but never thought about the GS
Is it a user-serviceable part? Do you wash it / replace it. Heck... I don't even know where it is
(I guess in the "tank" area!) Or should I ignore it until some warning light goes on, or for 8000km more until the next service
Given the kind of riding we do lately, I feel the urge to clean something on the inside too!
At least I clean & lubricate the chain regularly!!!

Re: Air filter cleaning on R1200GS?
Hi Marnus, the air filter is on the right hand side of the bike, you must remove the front cover and the small plastic cover just pops off.
to access the filter you must pull out two tapered plastic wedges that clip in top and bottom of the housing, once these are removed you slide the intake tube back and unclip the pin that is half way up the tube on the inside
just remember to remove all the loos sand and dust from around the fillter before you remove the fillter so that non gets into the air box.
once you remove the cartrige, tap all the loos sand out on a flat surface.
if you want more info , i will be glad to help

Thanks for the instructions Martin. I'll give that a go. And if the filter looks "off", I'll have to go pay Mr. GSing a visit

Pleasure, I found lots of sand in the air tube and filter when i replaced my one.
I think its good to do this stuf yourself as these are adventure bikes and we need to know our way around them.
I have a basic manual if you need it.
